just wanted to register my dismay at the judgment in Milawi this week and my hope that Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga will receive support and assistance from organisations such as Outrage whether they receive a custodial sentence or not given the threats of violence there has been to them in the community. I am not a member of the gay, lesbian, Transgender or Bi sexual community (nor of any church) but feel strongly that more needs to be done by Western Governments, Communities, and Churches to speak out against the homophobic (etc) attitudes of communities and their governments towards their own people. Whilst we can hope that those sentencing these young men will be lenient, their situation out in the community is not likely to be particularly positive and may be an existance fraught with danger. I hope that their plight and the plight of others in their situation will not be forgotten.

I heard about what happened to two young men in Malawi this week – I am outraged as well as being deeply saddened that these hateful and dangerous views exist in our world. I have recently moved in with my girlfriend and my son in Scotland and have done this with no problems so far – it makes me incredibly upset to hear about the situations across Africa – please contact me and let me know what I can do to make a difference and support our African brothers and sisters. Thank you.

Along with several other people I know, I’m extremely distressed by the sentence passed in Malawi this week. As well as donating to CEDEP, please could you advise how best to make a noise about this – writing to local MP etc?!
Thanks!

Thanks for the enquiries. We have just posted an Action Alert with details of how people can help support Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga.

I want to say a big thank you to Outrage! for supporting heterosexual couples obtain a civil partnership in addition to fighting for gay couples who wish to get married. We didn’t want to get married for years because our gay friends were unable to get married, and now that our gay friends can obtain a civil partnership, we would like to do the same because we don’t want to sign up to the patriarchal institution of marriage. I have been with my partner for 13 years and we have two children. Because we are not married, if we died, our children would have to sell our home. We recognise that groups such as Outrage are to fight for gay rights, and that is the most important mission, so THANK YOU for standing up for us too.

We would like to donate to the campaign or to join any actions – please let us know what we can do.
Lucy and Rod xxx
